Family & Relationships

Angela Puppington, née Middleinitial, was a minor character whose main purpose was to explain Clay's home life and current behavior. She was Clay's mother, Arthur Puppington's wife, and the predeceased paternal grandmother of Orel Puppington

Personality[]

Angela was a kind woman with limitless religious zeal. She had no aspirations outside of taking care of Clay, her "precious only ever," as best she could.

Before Clay was born, she was a thrill seeker, smoker and alcoholic. While her carefree lifestyle was alluring to her husband, it prevented them from having the child she wanted. She turned to God for guidance, focusing on her faith instead of her hobbies so much that she was practically a different person when Clay joined the family. Yet despite being closer to God than ever, she was fearful of Him, citing His wrath as the reason her ten stillborn never made it.

She was overjoyed at Clay being alive at all, and pivoted her life to focus on his. The two couldn't be separated for a few minutes without Angela missing him, and she hung photos of Clay in every room. She also taught Clay about Christianity, the importance of following the Lord and the "Lost Commandments." She didn't want Clay to ever feel sad, which made telling him the truth about his unborn siblings especially tough. If anything were to happen to him, she would pray to God for his safety and sacrifice her own life for his.

Angela could be reckless at times, as all of her attempts to create a child failed because she didn't think that drinking, smoking and horseback riding could be bad for the baby. She could also be insensitive, such as by giving Arthur their son's leftovers or mistaking Clay for one of her planned children.

Hearing "dead" or anything that can scary her is sounded like it was one of her triggers.

History[]

While she and Arthur were high school sweethearts, they gradually drifted apart after they got married as they tried, and failed, to conceive children. Her thrill-seeking and cigarette-smoking life gave her a weak heart, and the deaths of her stillborn children fostered intense thanatophobia.

After they finally conceived Clay, Angela focused all of her attention on coddling him. One day, as Angela and her son were perusing the family photo book yet again, she reluctantly told him about his ten unborn siblings. Despite her insistence that she still considered Clay her "precious only living ever," this deeply upset the kid, fueling a cruel prank that would be Angela's undoing.

Suddenly, Angela heard a gunshot. She found Clay in the study, lied down and apparently bleeding. As she broke down and prayed for a miracle to revive him. When she saw Clay alive by her side, she was happy, but her heart beat so fast and for so long that she died of cardiac arrest.

Relationships[]

Arthur Puppington

Previously youthful and full of affection, Angela's laser focus on Clay's well-being put a strain on their marriage. Despite this, they at least tolerated each other's company and tried to raise Clay as best they could, albeit not by working together. Angela was often critical about how Arthur raised him and vice versa. He often longed for the good old days with her, before they tried to have kids and she started smoking. After she died, Arthur blamed Clay for it and abused him.

Clay Puppington

Angela was one of few people in the show that unconditionally loved Clay for who he was. While it wasn't intentional, her constant coddling influenced Clay to become entitled and dependent on external validation. Clay has Oedipal feelings for her.

Trivia[]

  • Angela's first name incorporates "angel," referencing her religion and her death. Her last name refers to how she's a puppet.
  • Her stillborn children's names were Clark, Clarissa, Clementine, Clara, Clarice, Clea, Clancy, Clarence, Clinton, and Clondike.
  • All of the unborn childs including Clay have "Cl" on the name.
  • Clinton and Clondike are the one of the other sons who don't have the vowels "i" and "o" after "Cl".
  • Clementine and Clea are the one of the other daughters who have the vowel "e" after "Cl".
  • Unlike Clondike and Clinton (who have "o" and "i" after "Cl"), the sisters have no vowel other than "a" or "e" after "Cl".
  • As Angela lost her children and time passed, the more distant she became from her husband as shown in the photos. Be it because they are unable to have children, because they already know what could happen during pregnancy, or because they no longer feel attracted to them as time passes. (Even Arthur showing that he still loved her and losing the meaning of life after her death).
