Reverend Rod Putty, also known as "Revs" or "The Revs," is the minister of God's Favorite Protestant Church and a major character. He is Stephanie's father.

Personality[]

Despite being God's spokesman, Reverend Putty is hardly righteous. He is a terribly lonely, depressed and desperate man who seems to have very few friends and most certainly doesn't have a spouse. His crippling loneliness has caused him to become a snarky, self-absorbed, bitter, and insecure guy. Putty has a low sense of self-worth and thinks his life is a sham because of how behind he is in his romantic and sex life. Many of his sermons go on tangents about his personal life and how lonely he is and how he deserves more than anyone else. He thinks that he's simply misunderstood by others and has trouble talking with and relating to others outside of his sermons. His driving force is getting laid and finding a woman who loves him. Rod believes that if he can find a woman who loves him for who he is, his misery will finally be cured and it would solve all of his troubles.

Rod's ideal partner is both unconditionally loving and conventionally attractive: he refuses anyone that's a minority, overweight, or anything that's not a Playboy centerfold. If presented with someone attractive and someone nice, he often pursues the former. He also has a very low sexual tolerance, shown in the fact he ejaculates in his pants from Bloberta simply propositioning him in "Numb" and getting a hard-on when Florence simply touched his shoulder in "Sundays." Until he finds the one, Rod spends his nights masturbating.

When faced with a problem, Rod's preferred answers are to follow whatever God says or take the easy way out. He runs a Repressional in the church. During confessions, he simply advises his attendees to pray for forgiveness instead of pursuing self-improvement, even if he knows that most people in Moralton could use it. He's one of the few adults who knows how backwards the townspeople really are, but because of how jaded he is of his job and life, he hasn't done much about it.

While being the religous leader, he's almost considered a laughing stock of the town. Despite going to church every Sunday, very few people seem to respect him and think he's just a pathetic joke. This can be seen in several episodes when the townspeople are bored during a sermon, or in "The Lord's Greatest Gift," where Clay and Bloberta are making fun of Rod in the congregation. This could be one reason for his loneliness and why he's so disinterested in his job.

Rod often lets his jealousy and insecurities to get the better of him most of the time. Orel's constant praise and repetition of his sermon often irritate him to the point of ignoring or mocking the kid, and when Principal Fakey confesses that he's screwing Nurse Bendy, Rod shuts him down for stealing one of his "options."

As the show progresses, Rod starts to practice what he preaches. When the local sex shop owner, Stephanie confesses that she's his daughter, he was very upset because he was robbed of both a partner and a chance to pork someone, However, Rod eventually realizes that he ought to support her and be grateful that he's her father. He and Stephanie actually start to have a loving bond, as they are both seen together multiple times throughout the show. He also thought Orel was an obnoxious runt at first, but later realizes that he's a nice kid who deserves to be listened to and actually takes his advice. After being introduced to important people in his life, he slowly becomes a more laid-back, open-minded and not as sex-obsessed.

The Revs has a few hobbies. He thinks of himself as a great comedian, but his jokes don't seem to land. He's also into competitive eating, given that he frames a newspaper of him winning an eating contest. He sometimes also likes to play cards by himself.

History[]

Before he was a pastor, Rod was part of a comedy act with an unknown friend. Despite him claiming that his jokes knocked 'em dead, it's implied that Rod wasn't funny to begin with. He later quit comedy and grew to resent his partner. According to Rod, his former partner "screwed him over," but the truth remains unknown.

Many of Rod's misadventures revolved around his desperate, yet picky need for sex, even after he lost his virginity. One of his temporary partners was Florence Papermouth, who recently divorced her husband. Despite her loving his sermons, Rod's eyes were more on her friend, which came to light when he climaxed with Florence. They subsequently called it off, mainly due to Rod's visible disinterest in Florence to begin with.

He also had an unwitting, one-sided sexual encounter with Gladys Foamwire. One night, she sneaked into his house and inserted one of Rod's freshly used tissues inside of her, leading to the conception of Stephanie. Gladys would give birth to her sometime after, refraining from telling Stephanie of her relation to Putty until right before her passing.

In the unproduced episode "Narcissism", Rod would have become disillusioned from one-night stands while not getting Florence out of his mind. One night, he would muster up the courage to talk to Florence again. She would be skeptical at first, given that Rod treated her poorly in "Sundays" and seemed to be interested in her again because of her weight loss. However, she and Rod would get together at the end of the episode.

Family and Relationships[]

Stephanie Putty

She and Rod didn't know they were related until her mother revealed it on her deathbed. Rod was initially disappointed when he finally met a woman that he couldn't have sex with, but after Orel taught him to be grateful for what he had, Rod goes over to Stephanie’s shop and they start a father-daughter bond. He would grow to respect and love his daughter over time, and is grateful to be her father. He was able to realize that Kim never actually cared for Stephanie, and he wanted her to have a partner who truly loved her, regardless of gender. Stephanie would help him through rough patches in his life and give him advice to keep him on his toes. Throughout the show, they are seen hanging out together in several episodes.

Florence Papermouth

While her affection was rarely reciprocated or appreciated by Rod, Florence had an obsession with the reverend for a long time. One night, she managed to get him to go back to her apartment with her. The two had sex and he accidentally called her Dottie while climaxing. The two eventually called it off in "Sacrifice."

In the scrapped episode Narcissism he would miss her and eventually get back together after confessing his love for her.

Orel Puppington

Orel is the other half of Rod's two-person friend group. He admires Rod and always pays attention to his sermons, and while Rod gets annoyed with the little rascal at times, he would become more patient with him, realizing that Orel deserves better. In "Be Fruitful and Multiply," Orel imparted valuable wisdom to him about appreciating his family instead of focusing on what he doesn't have. After that, Putty has grown an appreciation of Orel's purity and optimism, and listen to him more. According to Dino, sometime in the unreleased season four, when Orel gets into his depressive 'Christian Goth' phase, Rod would've been the one to snap out of his depressive state.

Principal Fakey

He regularly attends confessions, always saying how miserable he is for cheating on his wife for the upteenth time. If Rod lets him talk about it at all, he's only in it to hear the details and live vicariously through Fakey's experiences.

Clay Puppington[]

He usually seems annoyed by Clay constantly mocking him during and after sermons, but are both indifferent towards one another. Their association was at a boiling point in "Sacrifice" when Clay torments him, and hinting to Officer Papermouth that Rod had sexual intercourse with his ex-wife.

Appearances[]

In most of his appearances, Rod is delivering a sermon that fuels the plot.

Trivia[]

  • Rod Putty's name is based on rods and putty, two building materials for figurines. His name is also a dirty joke, as "rod" is slang for "penis" and "putty" slang for "semen."
  • During Season 1's production, Dino Stamatopoulos was supposed to voice the character. As he wasn't thrilled with his performance, William Salyers was brought in to voice him instead. Dino's performance can be heard in a bonus feature on the Season 1 DVD.
  • In the season 2 episode, "Orel's Movie Premiere," he is implied to suffer from a gastrointestinal disorder commonly known as, "Irritable Bowel Syndrome." Also known as spastic colon or "IBS" for short, he refuses a hors d'ouvre from Bloberta on account that, "[He] will get explosive diarrhea in thirteen seconds." In the episode “Be Fruitful and Multiply,” while he is shopping at Figurelli’s store, he is seen buying hemorrhoid cream and toilet paper, showing that he may have rectal issues as well.
